Hatton: who next?
"The fat kid will be back", says Ricky Hatton. But against who?
The Hitman has already said he would rather die than go out on a loss following his Las Vegas heartbreak at the hands of Floyd Mayweather.
But where does he go next? And more importantly, who does he go for next?
Oscar de la Hoya has thrown his hat into the ring, Junior Witter says an all-British showdown is the only avenue left open and after two disappointing stabs at 147lbs, weight could dictate.
Here are the viable options left open to the Hitman...
The Hitter has long been calling out the Hitman and at long last, now has a belt to tempt him into a long-awaited showdown. Witter says Hatton has to meet him to remove any doubts before he does call it a day, Hatton has already told skysports.com the Bradford switch-hitter is "not in the equation" - but that was before defeat. Boxing fans up and down the country would demand it, it could sell out a major stadium and as a bona fide - and none too big - light-welterweight, Witter fits the bill on more than one count. Many experts would also back his style to pose big problems.
The Golden Boy is a Hatton fan and realises that despite defeat, the Hitman's stock his still high. Never one to miss out on a commercial opportunity and still big box office himself, de la Hoya would not be adverse to coming to Britain. Hatton has said he wants to fight on home soil next, Oscar could promote, the fans would love to see it, it keeps Ricky in the limelight, so what's the problem? Weight. It's been six years since Oscar boxed at light-welter and Ricky Graham and Kerry Kayes are adamant their man should step back down to light-welter, where he has done all his damage.
Does not hold the same interest and commercial potential as even Witter, but Hatton has always said it's not about the money. So could the WBA light-welterweight belt tempt him to take on the little Welshman, the latest off Enzo Calzaghe's conveyor belt of world champions? If Mayweather was too big, then pint-sized Rees would be perfect down at 140lbs, but in truth is not yet the established name Hatton demands. He also fights under Frank Warren's promotional banner and given the history between the two, it might be an insurmountable problem.
Hatton has fulfilled one dream by topping the bill in Vegas, but he has also made no secret of the fact that star billing at Madison Square Garden - where he had his second pro bout - is also up there. New Yorker Malignaggi is big enough box office to guarantee a sell-out and he also gives Hatton the chance to extend his American popularity to the east coast. A slick boxer, 'The Magic Man' has the style that would make a fight viable and he also has the IBF strap. Right up there at the front of the queue and a fight that the Hitman could definitely win.
Could be the dark horse in the mix. The Colombian holds the WBO crown vacated by Miguel Cotto's rise up through the weight division and is building a reputation as a knockout specialist. Twenty-eight of his 32 wins have come inside the distance and his only loss is indeed at the hands of Cotto. Has the title, would make for a sensational and potentially explosive match-up but lacks one crucial ingredient that Ricky now demands - box office. Inside the ring it would be great and would surely noty go the distance, but outside it Torres might not be big enough.
A year or 18 months ago this was being touted as the most explosive fight at 140lbs, but if Hatton is a light-welter trying to make it at welter, Cotto was the opposite. Kelson Pinto, DeMarcus Corley and Paul Malignaggi were all beaten at the lower weight, before the inevitable happened and he moved up to 147lbs. Since then Shane Mosley and Zab Judah have been taken care of and the Puerto Rican - despite initial doubts about his chin - is creeping up the pound-for-pound rankings. He is also big box office, but the chance of meeting at light-welter are remote at best. And, he is already on the Pretty Boy's radar.
What price a rematch? Wishful thinking it may be, but can it really be ruled right out? OK, Floyd would have to drop back down to 140lbs for anyone to even entertain the prospect, but he did say he always wanted to fight in the UK, so why not? Hatton and his fans clearly won the Pretty Boy's respect and he is never one to do what's expected of him - until he gets in the ring. It might appear madness to even contemplate it, but what if Floyd wants another challenge, aside from Cotto? Hatton again at light-welter might well be it. Ok, it is madness. I'll get my coat...

The best fight of 2007 Easily Hatton v Mayweather. His first lost of his life and his last! Oscar de la Hoya has to be his next fight as Mayweather struggled to take him on so it will be another great fight for the Hitman

There is no need for a rematch with PBF, we all saw the same fight. Would you Hatton fans stop making excuses about the ref and admit he was outclassed from the start, he couldn't land one significant blow on Mayweather. That is the cold hard truth, Mayweather beats Hatton ten out of ten times period! Hatton's best move is to go back down to 140 and fight Witter or the Magic Man, both of them pose some serious problems for the Hitman. I think it would be a terrible move for him to stay at 147 and fight Cotto, Cotto would destroy him. Lets be serious, Hatton is a "good" fighter at 147, a "dominant" fighter at 140. His fight with Mayweather showed a hugh disparity in skills and showed that Mayweather is just a class above him and I'm no Mayweather fan, just calling it how I see it.

Mayweather Vs Hutton I was expecting a lot from this fight....These two are more or less the biggest name in this division but frankly speaking watching that fight was like watching Barbie Doll Vs Superman. Mayweather was in a totally differen leauge to Hutton. It seemed Like Hutton woke in the morning and said, 'Uh, lets have a fight'. Afraid t say this me being british and all. Mayweather seriously rocked that day.... No doubt about it he is the best. And no point in blamming the refree as well. Hutton had 10 rounds to do damage, he couldn't come close to doing any damag, Mayweather on the other hand.... I think its best to move on and for hutton to take a sabatical for some time and then think about making a comeback!!!

Everyone want's a re-match, the problem is will Mayweather travel to Britian? Rumor has it out in vegas that referee Joe Cortez was handed a big pay cheque from the pretty boy. So would he really travel without his trusted aides? The answer is no, he can't pay a British ref, so why come to the U.K just to get beat, he knows he was in a fight with Ricky and that the ref saved him from getting beat. If pbm did agree to a rematch it would be in the U.S.A where money rules and he has plenty. If you watch all the fights Ricky has been involved in and Joe Cortez has refereed he let's Ricky fight on the inside, but the Mayweather fight he split every close battle. This has something to do with the bung Cortez recieved, my contacts in Vegas assure me this happened. So bring on the rematch and bring on a new ref and bring on Prettyboy, as he will get the fight of his life.

Let's see: De La Hoya would KO him, he's too big for him. He shouldn't even go near Cotto, the Puerto Rican would do a number of him, he is bigger, stronger, better than Hatton and he beat class fighters like Zab, Mosley that Hatton would never beat. Witter has the style to frustrate him and Malignaggi is very fast with an excellent jab, not easy fights for Hatton. Hatton would beat Gavin Rees, but Rees is out of the equation. And Floyd? Please, don't make me laugh. He is WAY better than Ricky, something which was clear to everyone before the fight apart from some Hatton fans who know nothing about boxing and keep making excuses while at the same time the entire boxing world recognizes Floyd as a much better fighter. Oh and by the way, learn to read between the lines people. When Mayweather praises Hatton and says he always wanted to fight in the UK, he is just playing to the fans. He could have easily said something like "I backed up what I said and knocked your boy out, how you like me now?", but chose not to, to be on the fans good side. You think that was difficult for Mayweather? Watch the first Castillo fight. That was difficult for Mayweather. In this fight I gave Hatton 2 rounds.PBF outlanded Hatton by more than 2:1 and toyed with him. But hey, if you want to keep blaming the ref be my guest. Fact is, Hatton will never beat Floyd, not in Manchester, not even in his back yard with a ref on his payroll, not on his greatest day. NEVER

Theres only one Ricky Hatton!!! Watching the Mayfeather fight was so exciting and i believe that their is noone that could give Hatton a better fight.. Mayweather now has nothing to lose he already beat Hatton, so if he really wants to fight in the UK he will give Hatton and his fans another chance.

Floyd Mayweather says...
Hatton VS Mayweather II Why, because 1) Mayweather wants to fight in the UK. 2) Fight at a weight that hatton rules - Light Weltherweight 3) Will be one of the most eagerly, anticipated rematches of all time. 4) All hatton fans, especially me wants to see him fight NO ONE else but mayweather. 5) Personally, I believe there is no one else hatton can fight except floyd(again) because hes too good for them. 6) Also this will be one of the biggest money matches ever. The fact of the matter is people may want to see hatton face others, but its not too exciting, everyone wants to see Floyd vs Hatton again, fair enough mayweather has nothing to prove but hatton does!

Is it me or is everyone quickly forgetting about the talent of Ricky Hatton! Fair enough Floyd Mayweather is THE best of the current boxing generation, bt us British Citizens have the best in the world at light-welterweight. Numerous people are saying Ricky should retire... why? because he took a chance to be the best pound for pound in the world? The guy still has bundles of talent and he is only 29. Calzaghe maybe fighting Hopkins at 42! Why should ricky retire when he still has a lot to prove and the quality to do so.

Right then lets put it in perspective.. Ricky got beat by a class boxer who knew what to do to win, i dont think Ricky executed his plan well and got rattled when points were deducted. However he has been getting a bit of a slatin by the media - unfairly in my opinion. Retire i dont think so, Welterweight is not for him obviously. Back down to Light Welter - sort out this Maglianni punk and get his belt - in America. Come back home shut Witter up once and for all. One more mega fight at Light welter in the UK - De La Hoya if he could make the weight, Cotto would be a belting fight while it lasted. I am not saying he would win but it would be a great way to end his career. Ricky no matter what you are still one of the UK,s best boxers ever.

What I would pay to see a rematch of Hatton v Mayweather. The fight was amazing and I would love to see them fight again but over here in England this time. Mayweather said that he would love to fight in England so there you go: Hatton v Mayweather II. Hatton will never give up and will always live on, even when he retires he will still live on.

I dont like the comments regarding Hatton fighting at welter as an excuse for his poor poor showing. HE choose to fight at welter, if he didnt like the contract, he shouldnt have signed it. Simple as. He was out-boxed and outclassed by a boxer WAY out of his league. Hatton out-threw and out-landed Mayweather in ONE round from 10. That says it all. I gave Hatton two rounds, and that's before the point deduction and the 10-8 round. Anyone who is moaning about the ref probably needs to watch the fight again, or watch any fight and realise/learn the rules of boxing. Hatton knew that he wouldnt get away with his grappling tactics, tryint to box in close, reducing Mayweather's reach. I didnt think Cortez was as half as bad as he could have been, especially after the first four. He hardly intervened in the later stages of the fight, from five onwards. I cant stand sour garpes in the face of a battering, I dont care if its from Hatton or his stead-fast biased supporters, be honest and see the gulf in class regardless of weight or a "dodgy" ref.

Gotta be Witter next. Theres no-one else for Hatton. Why would Cotto waste his time getting in with Hatton? He's a bigger name, and desperately wants to get in with Floyd. Thats the superfight of the decade, barring Floyd vs. Oscar. People say that Oscar should be next, but why? What would they fight for? Both beltless, both dismantled by Floyd, both over the hill and on the way slowly down. It would be a publisity fight, one I wouldnt pay to see. No desire no hunger wouls be created from this fight for either fighter, just cash...And a lot of it. Maybe the purse will be to big for them both to ignore, but it would be a pointless fight regardless. On the other hand, "The Hitter" vs "The Hitman" has history, a belt, bad blood, and a local twang to it. Id love to see it happen as would most knowledgable boxing Uk followers. If Hatton stops ducking the fight (for whatever reason), it would be a Uk superfight, the biggest on these shores for years, and one (at the best weight for both fighters) that would give Hatton a belt and platform to take one last huge fight before bringing his average career of fighting middle-rated fighters to a predictable close. Hatton needs to know (especially after his battering) that he isnt the big cheese in America, he isnt the worlds best boxer (It was Floyd's first KO in 2 Years) and that another defeat in America to the hands of Malignaggi, Torres, or Cotto would undo reputation built up over his previous 40 odd fights.

Retire or fight Floyd again at a more suitable weight then retire because fighting De La Hoya would be a waste of time he's past it unless the fight is six rounds. Witter is better on paper than his record suggests and Cotto & Mallignaggi again are not worth it. Nothing better than having another crack for your man and then calling it a day, just make sure Cortez is away from the action as he was pathetic and probably reacted to the fans booing the U.S. National Anthem which is a joke. I think they were just booing Mayweather and the nobody that sang the anthem when we bring the mighty Tom Jones!

Ricky is the best lightewelterweight on the planet. My ideal fights in order for ricky are. 1. Witter, 2. Malignaggi, and then a rematch with floyd with a different ref. All these fights at 140. Hes not a welterweight. Thats for sure now

I would just like to say i am so proud of ricky hatton....i firmly believe that should have a rematch with flloyd. I feel hatton does have what it takes to beat mayweather and feel free to disagree but i feel many factors not due to the fight itself contributed to hattons downfall. After listening to hattons post match comments i am sure he wants to fight mayweather again. There's only one ricky hatton

Ricky fought well but Mayweater, with the help of Cortez, was just too good on the night, and Ricky got beat by THE best boxer of our generation. But I'd love to see a re-match, maybe at Light-Welterweight, where Ricky may be able to dominate more. My ideal few fights would be Junior Witter at Wembley or Manchester MEN next, then Malignaggi at Madison Square Garden. Then the Re-Match of all re-matches with Mayweather at Wembley in summer 2009 as Floyd says he wants some time off.

I think Hatton should have two more fights at Light Welterweight, Paulie Malignaggi at the Mecca of Boxing and a mouth-watering domestic against Junior Witter in England. Although both men are defensive counter-punchers, they would fancy their chances against the Hitman after the number Mayweather did on him. It would be an interesting test of Hatton's confidence, to see if he comes back strongly from such a disappointing loss.

I think Paul Davies' comments are spot on. Ricky is at his best at 140lbs. His first turn at 147 against Collazo should have been a warning sign, but we all got carried away with his fantastic preparation during the documentary. In hindsight, he would have given Floyd a much tougher fight at light-welterweight, although I still would've tipped Floyd to win by a close decision. The only dangerous opponent out there for Mayweather is Miguel Cotto.

I notice Tony McCann thinks Hatton is an over-rated brawler? Strange that, I could have sworn Mayweather said completely the opposite about him! Hatton is class, just not at Welter. He's still good at Welter though and I think he's good enough to beat Mayweather. I believe that and I know Hatton himself believes that also. The referee ruined the fight for Hatton, plain and simple. He was the main cause of what ended up being an "upset". Now come on, an upset against the best pound for pound fighter on the planet? Get a neutral referee, get Floyd to Manchester and Ricky will show you the real reason he's called The Hitman.

Paul Davies says...
Forget De La Hoya, Mayweather and Cotto, Ricky's just not as effective at welterweight, he'd lose all three. His only option has to be Malignaggi at The Garden. Witter should fight Rees with Hatton then fighting the winner for the undisputed title and then retiring.
