Lee Richardson has conceded giving Droylsden a free goal in Chesterfield's 2-2 draw was the right thing to do.

The Spireites took the lead late on in their FA Cup second round clash in controversial circumstances on Tuesday evening, when Jack Lester scored an accidental goal after Droylsden had initially put the ball out of play.

When the throw-in reached Lester, he lobbed the keeper from 30 yards and the match was held up as Droylsden protested furiously.

Richardson decided to give Droylsden a free goal to cancel out the injustice, with Steve Halford scoring unchallenged minutes later to send the match into a replay.

Can't condone

"I can't condone what Jack did," Richardson told Sky Sports News.

"Whether or not he was meaning to score only he will know. We can't let that happen, it's against the spirit of the game."

Droylsden chairman and manager Dave Pace believes Chesterfield did the right thing in allowing them to equalise..

"It's the only thing I would have done," stated Pace. "It's the only thing you could do, the right thing because it's cheating at the end of the day."
