The Football Association has confirmed they are to investigate reports of crowd disturbances in the clash between Barnsley and Manchester United.

United booked their place in the quarter-finals of the competition with a 2-0 success at Oakwell, but the game was marred by incidents involving supporters.

Seven fans were arrested - three Tykes supporters and four Red Devils fans - following incidents at the ground.

There are reports that eight catering staff were trapped inside a food kiosk and had to barricade themselves in a store room for around 25 minutes as fans broke in and stole cash from the till and food from the shelves.

Stewards on the pitch also had food thrown at them during the violence, while two home fans encroached on the pitch towards the final whistle as United goalkeeper Ben Foster was preparing to take a goalkick.

Evidence

A statement on the FA's official website read: "Following a series of reported incidents, The FA is now awaiting the reports of an FA Crowd Control Advisor, present at the game, as well as from referee Chris Foy.

"Furthermore, The FA will also be liaising with both clubs and South Yorkshire Police to gather evidence relating to events at Oakwell."

And an FA spokesperson added: "There is no place for anti-social or violent behaviour in our game.

"Any culprit found to be involved in these disturbances and identified as such by either the police or clubs should be subject to a lengthy ban from attending football matches."

Barnsley are launching an investigation into the violence, accusing Manchester United fans of causing "substantial damage" at the stadium.

Swamp

The club has complained to police, who are to carry out their own inquiry into the incident.

A Barnsley spokesman said: "The club is going to launch a full investigation as soon as possible after substantial damage was caused in the concourse of the north stand.

"A complaint has been made to the police and we will be taking a look at CCTV footage of the incident before we can comment further."

A Barnsley spokesman added: "Scene of crime officers are down here now going through the North Stand and we're proceeding with our own investigation as well.

"It's a hell of a mess down there. Doors have been kicked in, tills have been damaged and there's food and drink everywhere. It looks like a swamp in one of the bars."
