USA on the attack against Norway

Dmitry Kalinin, Alexander Ovechkin and Maxim Sushinsky scored first period goals as Russia beat Switzerland 5-3 to set up a rematch between the two nations in the World Championship quarter-finals.

The victory saw Russia finish top of the qualifying round group and condemn Switzerland to fourth - meaning both teams will meet again in the last eight.

The Russians dominated the early stages of the qualification clash as Switzerland failed to register a single shot on goal until 10:07 into the game.

The first goal came after Kalinin crept in from the point to convert a cross-ice feed from Danis Zaripov at 15:21 before Ilya Kovalchuk's point shot increased the lead on a power play at 17:49.

Swiss fightback

Things went from bad to worse for Switzerland as Sushinsky breezed past defenseman Beat Forster and beat Anaheim Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller at 18:45 before Sergei Fedorov made it 4-0.

To Switzerland's credit they fought back admirably and early third period strikes from Rafaele Sannitz and Julien Vauclair slashed the deficit to two.

However, any hopes of a dramatic comeback were soon quashed as Sushinsky scored his second of the game with three minutes remaining after Hiller was pulled for an extra attacker.

There was still time for one more goal, albeit a consolation from Romano Lemm, as Switzerland now plot their revenge mission when the two sides meet in the quarter-final stage.

The Czech Republic finished the group in second and they will meet third-placed Sweden in the other quarter-final in Quebec City on Wednesday.

Dubinsky hat-trick

At Halifax, Nova Scotia, the United States wrapped up their qualifying round schedule with a 9-1 rout of Norway. New York Rangers forward Brandon Dubinsky helped himself to three goals for the Americans, who scored three times in each period.

With the win, the United States finished the group in third spot and will now face Finland in the last eight.

In the battle between unbeaten teams, Shane Doan and Dany Heatley each scored twice as the Canadians defeated Finland 6-3 to set up a quarter-final showdown with Norway, after Germany beat final eight hopefuls Latvia 5-3.

Ryan Getzlaf and Patrick Sharp also scored for Canada, who have now won 15 straight World Championship games dating back to last year.

In Monday's other late game Denmark upset Belarus 3-2.
