Blaze: Edged out in thriller
Edinburgh Capitals completely turned the form book on its head with a sensational 8-7 victory over league leaders Coventry Blaze on Sunday night.
The victory ends a five-game losing streak for the Scots, while Blaze crashed to their first road defeat in seven matches.
Amazingly, Paul Thompson's men almost pulled the game around after being 7-2 down after two periods.
A shorthanded goal by Greg Chambers brought Coventry to within a single goal, however the home nerves were eased when Jeff Hutchins, who finished with a hat-trick, hit the empty net with 1.03 remaining.
Elsewhere, Newcastle Vipers completed a four-point weekend with a 4-2 victory over Sheffield Steelers.
Joey Talbot silenced the 4,000 supporters inside the Metro Arena with an early goal for the visitors, however the Vipers responded almost instantly through Matus Petricko.
New signing Mark Rooneem edged Newcastle in front and things went from bad to worse for Dave Matsos' men when Brad Cruikshank was sin binned to a 2+2+10 for attempted spearing plus a game misconduct.
Jason Tejchma put Vipers 3-1 up in the final period and despite Talbot registering his second of the night shortly after, Newcastle moved within two points of top spot when Matic Kralj ended the scoring at 55.26.
The remaining game on Sunday night saw Cardiff Devils inflict more misery on rock-bottom Hull Stingrays with a 5-1 triumph at the Bay Arena.
The win ended a three-game losing streak for Gerad Adams' men and ensures Hull have now lost their last 11 on the road.
Max Birbraer (2), Matt Towe, Matt Miller and Phil Hill were on target for Devils - James Sanford responding for Rays.
