Simon: Sheffield switch
Sheffield Steelers have appointed former NHL winger Ben Simon as player-coach for the 2010-2011 Elite League season.
Simon, who played more than 80 NHL games and over 500 AHL matches, replaces Dave Matsos in the role following his high-profile departure.
Simon enjoyed a recent playing spell with the Toronto Marlies and he has prior experience in European hockey, having played with the Iserlohn Roosters in the German DEL in 2008-09.
Speaking on his move to Sheffield, Simon said: "I am very excited to join the Sheffield Steelers as a player-coach for the upcoming season. There is a long tradition of winning here and it made my decision much easier.
"Sheffield is and will continue to be one of the top tier teams in the EIHL. I have only heard great things about the town and the people, especially the fans.
"In the next couple days I will be contacting all of the players under contract for this upcoming season. From there, we will figure out the best course of action for the team going forward.
"One thing I will promise is that this team will give 100 percent every time they touch the ice, in practices and games."
Speaking on his expectations ahead of the new campaign, Simon added: "This season we are going to be a fun team to watch. I want the fans in Sheffield to be excited when they come to the arena because they know it's going to be a great game of hockey.
"Our goal is to win hockey games and we will take the necessary steps to achieve this goal."
