Aldershot manager Dean Holdsworth paid tribute to his players after they won 2-1 at Bradford on the opening day of the season.

The Shots flew out of the blocks and took the lead in the 18th minute when Alex Rodman's left-wing cross found Danny Hylton, who finished coolly.

The Bantams tried to get back into the game thereafter but their problems worsened seven minutes before the break as Robbie Threlfall could only head Rodman's cross past his own goalkeeper.

They did pull one back as James Hanson headed Jack Compton's cross home but the Shots held on and Holdsworth said: "We came here last year and played exceptionally well and got nothing for it - here we played exceptionally well and got what we deserved.

"I thought we were excellent first half and we knew we'd have to ride the storm and ride the occasion and I thought we handled that, we got round the second ball, we dropped down and passed the ball well and we scored two great goals.

"This was a big ask, to come here with the expectancy at this football club, and rightly so if you look at the size of it and we are minnows compared to this club and I knew it was going to be a big test."
