Triple Olympic gold medallist Chris Hoy's knighthood headlines the Queen's New Year Honours List, with every gold medal winner from Beijing being honoured.

Other big names on the list include Rebecca Adlington, who has been given and OBE, along with MBEs for Lewis Hamilton, James Degale and Christine Ohuruogu.

Scotsman Hoy will now head into the 2012 London Olympics as Sir Chris after landing the knighthood for his remarkable gold medal haul in China.

Hoy won the team and individual sprint, along with the keirin, as the British cyclists dominated in the velodrome in Beijing during this summer's Olympics.

"To become a knight from riding your bike, it's mad," said Hoy. "But it is, genuinely, just an amazing honour, it's also great for the sport."


Every gold medallist from Beijing was honoured in some way, after Team GB surpassed even the loftiest of expectations with their performances.

British cycling's performance director David Brailsford has been give a CBE after masterminding the Olympic success, as has Bradley Wiggins, who won two golds in Beijing to add to a gold, silver and bronze from Athens.

Other cyclists to be honoured include Nicole Cooke, Victoria Pendleton, Ed Clancy, Jamie Staff, Rebecca Romero, Jason Kenny, Geraint Thomas and Paul Manning - who have all been handed MBEs.

Paralympic swimmer David Roberts has a CBE after equalling Tanni Grey-Thompson's remarkable of 11 Paralympic golds, while fellow Paralympic swimmer Eleanor Simmonds, who was only 13 when winning two golds in Beijing, becomes the youngest ever recipient of an MBE.

Adlington became the first British women to win Olympic gold in the pool for 48 years, and promptly won another as she amazed everyone with her performances.

The popular 19-year-old from Mansfield won the 400m and 800m, when smashing the world record, and she gets an OBE to go along with the pair of designer shoes famously given to her by the mayor of her home town.


Women's 400m winner Ohuruogu was a stunning winner in Beijing, and has been rewarded with an MBE after a difficult year.

Hamilton's achievement of becoming the youngest ever Formula One world champion gets him an MBE in a list otherwise dominated by Olympians.

Ben Ainslie leads the sailing inclusion, with his three golds and a silver at the last four Games winning him a CBE, while Iain Percy, who won a second gold at Beijing, gets an OBE alongside British sailing manager Stephen Park.

Sailors Sarah Ayton and Sarah Webb receive OBEs after they repeated their gold medal success of Athens in the Yngling, while the third member of the crew dubbed 'three blondes in the boat', Pippa Wilson, gets an MBE for her first Olympic gold.

Middleweight boxer Degale, who has now turned professional, also receives an MBE after winning gold, as does his coach Terry Edwards.

Rower Steve Williams in an OBE after winning a second gold in Beijing, while performance director of GB Rowing David Tanner nets a CBE.
