Team Sky have confirmed the signing of triple Olympic gold medallist Bradley Wiggins on a four-year deal.

Wiggins has been linked with the BSkyB-backed squad, who will make their debut on the road in 2010, ever since his superb fourth place in this year's Tour de France.

The 29-year-old moves from Team Garmin-Transitions to the newly-formed British outfit and will be their leader at next year's Tour de France.

He was unveiled to the media in London alongside team principal Dave Brailsford who has also masterminded Great Britain's - and Wiggins' - stunning success on the track.

Announcing the signing, Brailsford said: "Brad will be at home in Team Sky. It is the perfect fit and he will be a marquee rider for us.

"Brad and I go right back to the Sydney Olympics - we've worked closely together for all that time.

"He is an exceptional athlete - a great performer at a great age. And he will get better still.

"At Team Sky he can continue to develop, surrounded by some of the coaches and performance experts who have worked with him for years as part of the British Cycling set-up. With his experience he will help us to develop our great young talents too.

"Brad was a real revelation at this year's Tour de France, has been hugely successful for British Cycling and his Olympic success has brought wide recognition. His presence will not only help us on the road but with the wider aims of inspiring people to not only follow the team but to get out and ride, whatever their age or ability."

Amazing

Wiggins himself said: "It has been an amazing year for me and my ride at the Tour has given me the drive to aim even higher. I know I can continue to develop and Team Sky is the perfect place to make that happen.

"The [speculation] has been going on for a while since I finished fourth in Paris and finally we had confirmation that we were good to go.

"I agree with Dave that moving to Team Sky is like coming home. I'll be on a British team with management and coaches who have shaped me as a rider. They are instrumental in my achievements so far and I know they are critical for the next part of my career.

"Team Sky has huge ambitions, not just for the team but for cycling and inspiring the public to ride. It's an amazing project and the next four years will be very exciting. I'm really looking forward to meeting up in the New Year and preparing for our first season - to be part of this from the start is something quite special."

Wiggins has performed for six road teams since he turned professional with the Linda McCartney team in 2001. He moved to Francaise des Jeux in 2002, Credit Agricole in 2004, Cofidis in 2006 - where he came 4th in the London prologue of the Tour de France - Team High Road in 2008 and Garmin-Slipstream in 2009.

His fourth place in this year's Tour de France equalled the best ever performance by British rider, matching Robert Millar's exploits in 1984.

Wiggins, who had a year remaining on his contract with Garmin, joins a strong British contingent on Team Sky, with Geraint Thomas, Ian Stannard, Russell Downing, Peter Kennaugh, Chris Froome and Steve Cummings already part of the team.

Wiggins initially made his name on the track, winning the men's Individual Pursuit at both the Athens Olympics in 2004 and also at Beijing four years later, where he also triumphed in the Team Pursuit.

He has won six Olympic medals in total as well as six golds at the World Track Championships. He was appointed an OBE in 2005 and awarded a CBE in the 2009 New Year Honours.

I'd go for Cav - fastest man on a bike by far. Get him for the flat stages in the TdF and the one day classics to keep the sponsors and the Team prominent. But build the TdF / Giro & Tour of Spain round Wiggins. Will be great to see a decent British Team for a change.

Graham Taylor says... Brad will do well with Sky he didn't get a great deal of help from Garmin riders What planet have you been living on Graham, Garmin riders helped him all throughout the tour. Bradley's only race win this year came because his team mate let him win. I think this is a bad move for Bradley (he has done it for the money), he should have stayed with Garmin for another couple of seasons and then looked at a possible move to Sky. p.s I'am a massive brad fan, but just feel it's a bad move.

Brad will do well with Sky he didn't get a great deal of help from Garmin riders he just stayed with the favorites in most mountain stages. Few mentions of Edwald Boassen Hagen but I think he will get most wins for Sky next year.

Sam Tuplin says...

sorry guys....but bad move....he'll no longer have the experience of big Dave Millar protecting him on the long stages and over the first few mountains or Vandevelde and Zabriskie in the big mountains...good team as sky is looking, i cant see wiggo winning with them! Just because its a british team doesnt mean we should all jump on the bandwagon.....remember linda mccartney?

I am so pleased for Brad and all at Team Sky and Pinarello. We know through awesome performances at the last 3 Olympics that Dave Brailsford, Shane Sutton et al know how to get the job done. Can Team Sky win TdF? Of course they can. Not only GC, but I think they have a pretty good shot at the White Jersey too. Wishful thinking? You bet!

It's great news for the Sky Team, Wiggo was the man Brailsford wanted from day one, I think now with Bossen Hagen and Lokvest there to shadow some of main GC contenders, a podium isn't out of his reach. He'll may find it too hard to beat Andy Schleck and Contador on this years route however. But anyway I haven't felt so excited for the new season for quite sometime, and I haven't even mentioned Cav.....

I agree with Daniel, having Cav in the team would mean splitting the interests. You only have to look at the number of riders in Cav's leadout train at Columbia to see how much effort is required to ensure his victories (although I'd say he'd still come up trumps with only a couple in front of him). A great signing for Team Sky, and a strong team to contend in races throughout the season. It's a pity for Garmin, one of the good teams out there that actively promote clean racing. Hats off to them for allowing Wiggins to shine last year. Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing Russell Downing racing in big pro races, a long time overdue, and at last he's at a team that's not going to disappear! Bring on 2010!

Bob - Mark Cavendish will not be signing for Team Sky at any point in the next couple of years probably. This is due to his entire team currently being geared towards getting him the green jersey (best sprinter) at Le Tour. As Dave Brailsford said at the outset, the point of Sky is to win the tour within 4 years, and due to the manpower involved in setting up a sprinter and defending a GC hopeful the two objectives conflict to the point where to do both is more or less unthinkable. IT is therefore neither in Cavendish's nor Sky's interests to work together at the moment. Sky are looking good with the 4th ranked rider in the world last year Edvald Boasson Hagen as well as Thomas Lokvist and now Wiggo. Dont expect too much too soon but if they gel quickly it should be a good year for sure

Fantastic news. All we need now is Cavendish on the sprints. i am sure it will happen one day but at least in cycling they respect contracts and see them out. I look forward to the day we get the British cycling greats in one team. Come on Team GB.

Bob Pendleton says...

About time to, why have such an excellent national team cycling infrastructure. Nurturing our young (Potential Olympic medallists) only to pass them on to a continental racing team. Please excuse my lack of knowledge on this subject; but what are the prospects of getting Mark Cavendish onto the Team?

Brilliant news - thought it would never happen! So excited about watching next season (yes, there are races other than the TdF!). Give them a year or two to grow as a team but it's great news for everyone except Garmin. BTW Sky Sports: how about adding 'Cycling' as a favourite sport in this form?

Father christmas has come early.Great boost for the team and the texts are already flying around. I feel like leaving the office and getting on my bike.

David Wilson says...

Well, Team Sky have their GC contender they wanted - and Garmin lost the chance to have Contadorin replacement too. So, it'll be interesting to have Wiggins v Radio Shacks Armstrong/Leipheimer/Kolden v Saxo's Schlecks v Astana's Contador v BMC's Evans v Garmin's Vandevelde - lots of teams with genuine GC contenders (as long as anyone believes Contador is beatable, that is).

Great news for British cycling. Well done Team Sky and good luck to Brad and the rest of the team. Let's hope this generates even more interest in the sport here.

Superb signing for Team Sky and for Bradley Wiggins too - looking forward to seeing thjis team perform.

Cameron Murray says...

Great signing for Team Sky, and a great move for Brad too. But!!! Let's not expect too much for next years Grand Boucle, there is still Contador, Andy Schleck and Armstrong to worry about, and Brad still has to show further improvements in the mountains if he is to be considered for the overall yellow. Still, it's exciting though!!!
