Puttick: feasted on Otago bowlers
Champions League T20 - Group C
Hyderabad
Cape Cobras 193-4 (A G Puttick 104 no) v Otago 139
Cape Cobras beat Otago by 54 runs
Andrew Puttick's buccaneering century helped the Cape Cobras become the first team into the Super Eights at the Champions League Twenty20 with a 54-run victory over the Otago Volts.
Puttick scored 104 not out off just 62 balls, including 12 fours and three sixes, to make a mockery of Otago skipper Craig Cumming's decision to bowl first in Hyderabad.
The left-hander, who played a solitary one-day international for South Africa four years ago, batted throughout the 20 overs as the Cobras piled up 193-4.
The Cobras skipper's innings was all the more remarkable given that he had been due to miss the tournament until Graeme Smith was ruled out by injury.
Volts overseas player Dimitri Mascarenhas (2-20) removed Herschelle Gibbs (1) and Henry Davids (12) with the new ball but thereafter the batsmen dominated.
Puttick added 95 off 62 balls for the third wicket with Jean-Paul Duminy (32) and an unbroken 54 off 23 deliveries for the fifth wicket with Justin Ontong (39no) at the death.
Otago never threatened to chase down such a formidable target, crashing to 139 all out in 17.1 overs.
Neil McCullum's 38 was the top score of a disappointing effort, which included three run outs.
The final Group C fixture on Monday between the Volts and the Bangalore Royal Challengers is now a straight shoot-out to determine who joins the Cobras in advancing to the Super Eights.
