Le Fondre: Scored brace
Leaders Bournemouth drew with high-flying Dagenham, while Rochdale and Rotherham both posted wins to close the gap at the top.
Table-toppers Bournemouth could not break down Dagenham at Dean Court but the draw ensured they stayed top, while the Daggers dropped to fourth with the stalemate.
Second-placed Rochdale closed the gap at the top to just one point after coming from behind to beat Notts County 2-1 at Spotland.
Ben Davies put the Magpies ahead in the 35th minute but Chris Dagnall replied from the penalty spot six minutes later and Chris O'Grady got the winner for Dale on the stroke of half-time, with the defeat sending County down to seventh.
Adam Le Fondre scored in either half to help Rotherham beat Lincoln and send the Millers third, also a point behind the Cherries.
Andrew Morrell also netted two goals as Bury beat in-form Chesterfield 2-1, with the win moving the Shakers up to sixth while the Spireites stay in fifth.
Shrewsbury dropped out of the play-off berths with a 2-1 reverse at Hereford, who won courtesy of Ryan Valentine's fifth minute penalty and a second from Gavin McCallum (30), although Waide Fairhurst pulled one back for the Shrews on the stroke of half-time.
Cheltenham sealed a much-needed win by coming from behind to thump Barnet 5-1, with goals from Andy Gallinagh, Justin Richards and a Ben Marshall brace, as well as an Ismail Yakubu own goal, after John O'Flynn had put the Bees ahead.
A Scott Donnelly penalty ten minutes from time and a last-gasp Marvin Morgan winner saw Aldershot come from behind and beat Northampton 2-1, while Crewe beat Burton Albion by the same scoreline thanks to early goals from Clayton Donaldson (12) and Joel Grant (19).
Simon Whaley scored on his first start for Bradford, with Steve Williams and James Hanson also on target for Stuart McCall's side, to ensure Neil Woods' first game in charge as permanent boss of Grimsby ended in defeat at Blundell Park.
Torquay earned a valuable point at Port Vale with a 2-2 draw, but rock-bottom Darlington lost to in-form Morecambe after Phil Jevons, Laurence Wilson, Stuart Drummond and Wayne Curtis struck in the second period to hand the Shrimps a fourth successive league win for the first time in their history.
A waterlogged pitch caused the postponement of Accrington Stanley's home clash with Macclesfield before a ball had been kicked.
