Vidic: Disappointed
Nemanja Vidic was left to rue what might have been after Serbia lost 2-1 to Australia to crash out of the World Cup.
Serbia dominated the first period but Milos Krasic, Branislav Ivanovic and Nikola Zigic all spurned good chances.
They were made to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal as Australia improved after the break and Tim Cahill and Brett Holman both hit the target.
Marko Pantelic pulled a one back on 84 minutes but strayed needlessly offside when presented with two golden opportunities to score the equaliser they needed to progress into the last 16 on goal difference ahead of Ghana.
Vidic was devastated after the game, believing the Serbs had given themselves a golden opportunity after beating Germany last time.
The Manchester United centre-half said: "It is a very sombre atmosphere in the dressing room because we played a very good first half, the best since beating Romania 5-0 in the qualifiers.
"Australia were more aggressive in the second and we ran out of steam after they started pounding us with long balls and sharp crosses into our penalty box.
"We are very disappointed because we expected to reach the knockout stage of the competition, especially after beating Germany and giving ourselves a good chance of progressing."
