Despite pre-tournament fears, the Rainbow Nation has generally received praise as the first African country to host the showpiece event.

But 33-year-old Villar, a veteran of two previous World Cup finals, disagrees and has voiced his dissent following his country's exit to Spain at the quarter-final stage.

The Valladolid goalkeeper told Telefuturo: "I think South Africa weren't prepared to host the World Cup.

"Like in the first game, against Italy, when we had to go to the hotel, the bus broke down - a new bus - and we had to wait 45 minutes and we had to go in taxis.

"Fifa only cares about the stadiums and what you see on TV."

Despite this upset, Villar enjoyed an impressive World Cup, only conceding two goals in the tournament, as well as saving a penalty in the defeat to Spain.
