Birmingham have failed in a €2million (£1.6m) offer for Lokomotiv Moscow forward Peter Odemwingie, according to the Russian club.

Alex McLeish has already signed Nikola Zigic this summer but he remains keen for more attacking options and he has been linked with a renewed approach for Liverpool's Ryan Babel.

Nigeria international Odemwingie, who featured at this summer's World Cup, also appears to be a target and Lokomotiv claim to have rejected an offer from Birmingham.

The 28-year-old only has one year remaining on his contract in Russia but Lokomotiv are still understood to want a fee in the region of £8million for the former Lille player.

Lokomotiv president said in The Sun: "The offer of Birmingham of €2million seemed ridiculous to us."

McLeish is also understood to be keen to sign a left-back as he aims to enhance his squad in order to boost hopes of European football at St Andrews.

Fulham defender Paul Konchesky is still thought to be the top target but reports in the Far East have suggested that there could be a move for Japan's Yuto Nagatomo.
