Henderson: Mad Max hope

Mad Max, who has won all four of his National Hunt starts so far, is now being fully tuned up for his crack at this year's Cheltenham Festival.

Nicky Henderson's hurdler has recently gone in for surgery on his throat, but is now reported to be back fit and well.

The Lambourn handler said: "He's fine and we have just done a little operation on his throat which just needed some attention and he is back now for the first time today and he seems very well."

Mad Max is one of the biggest horses in training and usually kicks his hurdles out of the ground.

However his performances have caught the eye in recent times and Henderson believes that he will become an even better chaser.

"His size doesn't affect him but he will just be a better horse when he jumps fences," Henderson told

"He is enormous but he has done everything right so far in his bumpers and over hurdles and he is very, very good."

The seven-year-old has a couple of targets at this season's Cheltenham Festival and a decision will be made closer to the time as to which one Mad Max contests.

"We have yet to decide which race at Cheltenham we are actually going to go for, he is in the Supreme Novices' and Ballymore Properties race and a lot will depend on the ground," Henderson added.
