Real Madrid suffered a first defeat of the season at Espanyol, while Villarreal leapfrogged Barcelona in the table.

Primera Liga champions Real suffered a shocking start at Espanyol, conceding after just two minutes of the 2-1 defeat.

Albert Riera rose unmarked to head home a corner from the right and the lead was doubled in delightful fashion on 54 minutes.

Raul Tamudo was picked out in space on the edge of the box and the striker clipped a brilliant chip over Iker Casillas.
