There were mixed fortunes for British trio James Ward, Dan Evans and Daniel Cox on the first day of qualifying ahead of the French Open in Paris.

While Evans could muster just four games in slipping to a tame defeat, Ward and Cox both survived to fight another day with straight-set victories in their matches.

Ward beat the world No 206 from Moldova, Radu Albot, 6-3 7-5 in exactly 100 minutes, with the 27-year-old Londoner sending down five aces to none from his opponent.

The 171st-ranked Ward has shown some decent form on clay this year, most notably in beating American Sam Querrey in a live Davis Cup singles in San Diego back in January.

Ward will need to win two more qualifying matches at Roland Garros to make it into the tournament proper which starts on Sunday.

American up next

His next opponent is 22-year-old American Ryan Harrison who is a former top-50 player.

Also through is Lincoln-based Cox who outplayed Israel's Amir Weintraub 6-2 6-1 in under an hour. Cox sent down eight aces and lost just 11 points on his own serve.

However, British No 2 Evans was completely outplayed in his tie against Portugal's Gastao Elias who has a world ranking some 51 places below the player from Birmingham.

Elias cruised to a 6-3 6-1 triumph in just 62 minutes, breaking serve four times with world No 130 Evans losing six games in a row in the second set.
