Serena Williams: Aiming for her third French Open title
Serena Williams is prepared for the defence of her French Open cown at Roland Garros after being drawn against local hope Alize Lim in the first round.
Williams is fresh off a win at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in which only Ana Ivanovic took her to three sets.
The 32 year-old doesn't have the best record at the French Open, after falling at the first hurdle in the tournament two years ago, which was a career low-point for her.
"I have the capability of playing on clay, so I don't know why I wasn't more consistent on clay before. But, hey, I guess better late than never right."
Despite reaching the doubles final in 2010 with sister Venus and mixed-doubles final in 1998, the 17-time Grand Slam winner has only been in two singles' finals in Paris, albeit having won them both.
Now the American is determined to make this her third French Open triumph as she begins the defence of his title.
"For me, the French Open is extremely important because it's a grand slam I only won twice and I want to win more and more," the world No 1 said.
"I won five time Wimbledon, Australian, the US Open, so for me it's important.
"I have the capability of playing on clay, so I don't know why I wasn't more consistent on clay before. But, hey, I guess better late than never right?"
Recently however, Williams record on clay has improved. She has gone three seasons with at least one win on clay in Europe which is largely thought to be her least favourite surface.
"I don't know what clicked or didn't click (on clay). I grew up on hard courts and then when I turned 10 I played only on clay until I turned pro," added the 32 year-old.
"I'm really good now. I'm great. I feel like this is the only place I want to be.
"I don't remember the last time I was defending champ (in Paris), so it feels really good that I'm here as defending champion.
"I'm really excited. I think I have had a really long, great career. It just feels really good to be at this point in my career and playing as defending champion."
The top seed faces 23-year-old Lim in the first round of the tournament, which starts on May 25th.
