Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka were among a number of big-name players to lose in the third round of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.

The Spaniard showed signs of fatigue after competing at the Rio Olympics as he was beaten 6-1 6-3 by Borna Coric, while Wawrinka's error-strewn showing saw him lose 6-4 6-4 against Grigor Dimitrov.

They were later joined out of the tournament by Kei Nishikori - the man who denied Nadal a bronze medal at the Rio Games - and Tomas Berdych.

Nadal double faulted five times and ended with 27 unforced errors in a ragged performance against Coric.

The talented Croatian had previously beaten Nadal two years ago in Basel at the age of just 17, and he repeated this feat to reach the quarter-finals of a Masters event for the first time.

Coric said: "It was an unbelievable match on my side. I think he wasn't playing his best tennis."

Third seed Nadal was followed out of the tournament by the second seeded Wawrinka, who smashed his racket on the ground while dropping the first set.

The Swiss player committed two unforced errors at 3-3 in the second set, allowing Dimitrov to claim another decisive break.

Dimitrov - who is Wawrinka's doubles partner - said: "I need matches like that. I need 10 or 12 more of those matches to sustain that level and also to send a statement not only for me, but towards everyone."

In the later matches, Coric learned he will face his compatriot Marin Cilic next after he ousted Berdych in three sets.

Nishikori, meanwhile, lost two tie breaks to Bernard Tomic and the Australian will face Andy Murray next, with the Scot 4-0 up in their previous head-to-heads.

Seventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also bowed out following a 6-3, 7-6 defeat to Steve Johnson, with the American taking on Dimitrov next.
