Dominic Thiem suffered a shock 6-3 6-2 defeat to India's Ramkumar Ramanathan in the second round at the Antalya Open on Tuesday.

The world No 8, who reached the French Open semi-finals earlier this month after beating Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the previous round, was beaten in just under an hour by Ramanathan, ranked 222 in the world, who hit 10 aces to the Austrian's four.

Thiem, who arrived in Turkey after a second-round loss to Robin Haase last week on grass in Halle, saved three break points in the second set but struggled to land his first serve.

The defeat will come as a blow to Thiem's Wimbledon preparations but 22-year-old Ramanathan will meet Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus in the quarter-finals.

"I worked really hard for this," Ramanathan said. "I like the grass. Courts are fast. I took my chances and it worked out."

Elsewhere, rain washed out the all-British showdown between Marcus Willis and Liam Broady in the Wimbledon qualifiers, while Novak Djokovic's preparations for the tournament were also affected when heavy rain caused play at Eastbourne to be cancelled.

Willis, 26, who memorably faced Roger Federer in the second round at the All England Club last year, was due to face compatriot and friend Broady in the penultimate qualifying round at Roehampton but play was suspended at around 1pm.

Broady, 23, is also looking for a return to Wimbledon having been beaten by Andy Murray in the first round last year. Willis is currently the British No 9 and ranked 374 in the world, 10 places higher than Broady, the national No 10.

The homegrown pair will have to try again on Wednesday, with the winner then facing either Illya Marchenko of Ukraine or German veteran Benjamin Becker for a place in the main draw.

Of the Brits who did manage to play on Tuesday morning, 18-year-old Katie Swan, of Bristol, was beaten 6-3 5-7 6-0 by Uzbekistan's Nigina Abduraimova, Hong Kong-born Tara Moore lost 7-5 6-2 to American Irina Falconi, while Katy Dunne was forced off at 2-2 in the first set against Ivana Jorovic.

At Eastbourne Djokovic took the opening game against Canada's Vasek Pospisil and was leading 30-15 in the second when the rain started.

Play was then repeatedly postponed until, finally at 5pm, attempts to resume were abandoned until 10.30am on Wednesday morning.
