Fifth seed and 2014 champion Marin Cilic was knocked out of the US Open in the third round by Argentina's Diego Schwartzman.

Schwartzman won 4-6 7-5 7-5 6-4 to reach the last 16 of a Grand Slam for the first time as Cilic became the 15th seeded men's player to exit the competition

Cilic, who missed six weeks since reaching the Wimbledon final with an adductor strain, hit 80 unforced errors in an untidy display on Grandstand three years after he lifted the trophy at Flushing Meadows.

The 29th-ranked Schwartzman was overwhelmed in the opening set before finding his range to frustrate Cilic.

And after denying the Croatian with two break points in a tense final game, Schwartzman stumbled over the finishing line before celebrating in style on Grandstand.

"The last game was terrible," Schwartzman said. "In my mind, I can't play. I'm trying to improve my tennis. I'll try to be more quiet in the end of the next match when I finish."

He will face either French 16th seed Lucas Pouille or Kazakh qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin for a place in the quarter-finals.
