British No 1 Kyle Edmund will face the winner of Leonardo Mayer or Yuichi Sugita in the second round of the Winston Salem Open as he aims to put the final touches to his US Open preparations in fine style.

Edmund, 23, was beaten by Canadian Denis Shapovalov in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters last week meaning the world No 16 has only won one match during the American hard court swing.

"I was planning on not playing here, and then I got offered a wild card a while ago," Edmund said.

"But I didn't want to take it and then not play and pull out. But then two weeks ago, I hadn't had enough matches basically. So that's why I said I accepted it, which was nice for me, I guess to be able to get here."

Seeded third in Winston Salem, Edmund could potentially meet American home favourite Steve Johnson in the quarter-finals, a player over whom he holds a 2-1 record in their head-to-head.

Edmund could then meet last year's US Open's semi-finalist, Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in the semi-finals.

Other notable players in the final tune-up event before the US Open are Frenchman Gilles Simon, American Sam Querrey & Russian Andrey Rublev.
