If Murray had not got the match wrapped up so soon after the 11pm deadline he would have been forced to come back on Monday to finish it. The fourth seed will face Croatia's Marin Cilic on Monday for a place in the quarter-finals. Moment of the day

Kazakh wildcard Yaroslava Shvedova defeated Italian 10th seed and French Open runner-up Sara Errani 6-0 6-4 to reach the last 16 for the first time. Shvedova also made history by winning all 24 points in the opener to achieve a rare 'Golden' Set, eclipsing her own WTA record of 23 straight points won during a second-round match against Amy Frazier, in Memphis in 2006. There had only ever been only one 'golden' set recorded on the professional tours. In 1983, Texan Bill Scanlon beat Brazilian Marcos Hocevar 6-2 6-0 at Delray Beach.

Tweet of the day

Shvedova, the world number 65, hit 14 winners and took just 15 minutes to demolish Italian 10th seed Errani, the French Open runner-up, in an incredible first set on Court Three. The 24-year-old, the Wimbledon doubles champion in 2010 and twice a French Open quarter-finalist, tweeted after the game: "Today I laid a golden egg."

Joke of the day

Serena Williams hit a Wimbledon-record 23 aces, held every service game and narrowly escaped an upset bid by Zheng Jie, winning 6-7 (5) 6-2 9-7. Williams has been stalled at 13 Grand Slam titles since winning Wimbledon for the fourth time in 2010, and dealt with a series of health issues in 2010-11. Her next opponent will be unseeded Shvedova, and Williams said after her match: "Hopefully I'll be able to win a point in the set. That will be my first goal, and then I'll go from there."

Comeback player of the day

Brian Baker's fairytale Wimbledon continued as he reached the fourth round with a four-set win over France's Benoit Paire. The American, once one of the world's best juniors, only returned to professional tennis last July after almost six years out with a succession of injuries that looked to have curtailed his career before it had really started. Baker went to college and took a job as a tennis coach but never gave up hope that he would be able to return to the circuit, and his comeback gets more remarkable with every match. Today he was a 6-4 4-6 6-1 6-3 winner.

Quote of the day

Baker lost six years of his career to an assortment of injuries that left him needing five different operations on a hernia, left and right hips and right elbow. The 27-year-old, who started the year ranked 458, will rise to at least 78 after his performances this week. And after today's win, he said; "It's been unreal. On court I still have nerves when you know what's on the table and what you have accomplished. It's crazy what's been going on."

Story of the day

Rufus the Harris hawk which patrols the skies above Wimbledon to deter pigeons has been stolen, police have said. The bird was taken, along with his cage, from a car parked in a private drive in Wimbledon with the rear window open for ventilation. Rufus, a four-and-a-half-year-old hawk, is environmentally friendly because he scares off pigeons, which can distract players, purely by his presence. His distressed owners are appealing for help in getting the bird of prey back so he can resume his role of turning the world's most prestigious tennis tournament into a pigeon-free zone. Hawks have been used to clear the skies above Wimbledon during the tournament for about 12 years, as an environmentally friendly form of pest control. Rufus would fly above the courts every morning and evening during the annual two-week tournament.

Olympians Mark Foster, Dame Kelly Holmes and Amy Williams joined former tennis stars Ilie Nastase, Martina Navratilova, Mary Pierce and Boris Becker along with cricketers Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook and former legend Geoffrey Boycott. Sir Bobby Charlton and Ryan Giggs joined 'The Golden Bear' himself Jack Nicklaus as well as rugby stars Chris Robshaw and Adam Rhys Jones, actor Dustin Hoffman and singer Camilla Kerslake in the crowd.

2009 Wimbledon's new Centre Court roof was used at the tournament for the first time after rain interrupted the match involving Dinara Safina and Amelie Mauresmo. 2010 Top seed and defending champion Roger Federer lost in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon to Tomas Berdych.
