Defending champion Tommy Haas was eliminated from the BMW Open in Munich after a 6-3 6-2 defeat to Martin Klizan in the semi-finals.

Home favourite Haas was a big favourite against the 111th-ranked qualifier but came unstuck in cold and damp conditions at the clay-court event.

Haas, who is still getting back to full fitness following a shoulder injury, went down in a little over an hour as Klizan set up a final date with Fabio Fognini.

Top seed Fognini prevented the final being a clash of two qualifiers as he clinched a 6-3 6-1 victory over German outsider Jan-Lennard Struff.

Fognini stayed on course to win a fourth ATP title in under a year as he cruised to victory against his 24-year-old opponent.

"I did exactly what I had to do," the Italian said after the match.

"I did exactly what my coach told me. I do not know if it is Struff's first semi-final but he did it well here this week."
