Kei Nishikori battles past Viktor Troicki in Italian Open

Highlights of Viktor Troicki v Kei Nishikori from the second round of the ATP Masters in Rome.

Kei Nishikori defeated Viktor Troicki 5-7 6-2 6-3 to advance to the third round of the Italian Open on Tuesday.

The No 6 seed from Japan was broken in the 12th game to concede the opening set before recovering to break his opponent four times to claim victory in just under two hours.

"After the first set I tried to step in a little more, and I think in the first set I wasn't aggressive enough to keep him moving side to side," said Nishikori.

"I think in the second and third sets, I started hitting much better backhands, started playing angles, down the line, and everything worked well after first set.

"Tennis-wise, I'm happy with what I'm doing. I think I'm serving well and returning well."

Elsewhere in the second round in Rome, Tomas Berdych saved all eight break points he faced to see off the challenge of Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-3 6-4.

Stanislas Wawrinka also came through a tricky test as he came from behind to beat Benoit Paire 5-7 6-2 6-1.

Frenchman Paire grabbed the opener but Wawrinka earned three breaks to cruise through the second set.

During the final set, Paire double-faulted to give the Swiss the break at 1-2, and he then held at love to go 4-1 up before seeing out the match.

Meanwhile, in Tuesday's first round action, Britain's Aljaz Bedene was beaten 7-6 7-6 by fellow qualifier Stephan Robert.
