Johanna Konta, who was born in Australia before switching allegiances to Britain, is through to the second round however Anne Keothavong has failed to advance.
Konta, the world No 153, needed three sets and more than two-and-a-half hours to overcome the challenge of Anastasia Sevastova, ranked 26 places lower.
Konta eventually came out on top 6-3 6-7 (10-8) 6-4 to set up a second-round encounter with Yi-Miao Zhou, who beat the 11th seed Eva Birnerova.
Keothavong, seeded 22nd, crashed out after a disappointing loss to Grace Min.
The 18-year-old American held her nerve to win the big points in a 7-5 7-5 victory.
