Sharapova was simply unplayable at times as she stormed to a 6-1 6-3 victory against the former beaten finalist.
The second seed had already registered back-to-back 6-0 6-0 victories en route to the third round - but Williams was expected to pose a much tougher test.
However Williams was simply blown away with Sharapova's pace and power proving too much in the first set.
Williams, seeded 25th, finally fashioned a run of break-point chances at the death - taking one at the fifth time of asking - but it was scant consolation as Sharapova was able to close out the match.
"I really wanted this victory," said Sharapova, who will now face Kirsten Flipkens in the fourth round.
"I was 5-1 up (in the second set) and made a couple more errors than I would have liked so I was very pleased to have served it out.
"When we both looked at the draw this was the match-up that we were both
looking forward to.
"I was really excited to play Venus again. She is a great athlete and no matter where she is ranked she's always a very tough player to play."
