The 18-year-old Keys, who has been widely touted as a future top-10 player, fell 7-6 (7/0) 6-2 to the Russian qualifier who stands 110 places behind her at 154th in the world rankings.
The three seeds in action on day four all survived but not without each having to scrap to reach the quarter-finals.
No 3 seed Dominika Cibulkova fended off = Stefanie Voegele 7-5 7-6 (7/5), while fourth seed Jamie Hampton edged out fellow American Nicole Gibbs 7-5 6-7 (5/7) 6-3.
Hampton told wtatennis.com: "I wasn't expecting to be at the top of my game - it was my first match since Wimbledon and it's a tough transition to come back and get into playing mode again.
"But I didn't get down on myself. I wasn't too hard on myself when things weren't going my way for a while.
"I'm pleased that I competed hard and tried to stay positive, and I'm happy to get another opportunity to play now."
Seventh seed Urszula Radwanska knocked out Daniela Hantuchova but was pushed all the way in each set by the experienced Slovakian who eventually bowed out 7-6 (7/3) 7-6 (7/3).
