German Petkovic has endured a dreadful 18 months with injuries and has seen her ranking slip from the top-10 to outside the top-100.
However, she reached the final in Nurnberg in June and once again proved the talent is still there by battling back to beat Ormaechea after dropping the opening set.
In 2011, Petkovic was the only player to reach three of the four grand slam quarter-finals but has since struggled with back and ankle problems.
Currently ranked 64, the 25-year-old will play fourth seed Alize Cornet for a place in the final after the Frenchwoman overcame fifth-ranked Sorana Cirstea 7-6 6-2.
In the other half of the draw Ekaterina Makarova of Russia was gifted a place in the last four on the retirement of opponent Monica Niculescu after completing just one game.
The third seed will now take Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova who produced a superb performance to oust top seed Angelique Kerber of Germany.
Kerber levelled the match after Rybarikova had taken a one-sided tie-break to move ahead, but the seventh-seeded Slovak held her nerve in the decider to win 7-6 (7/0) 3-6 6-3.
