The two-time champion completely dominated the local hopeful to get off to a winning start in the eight-player round-robin event.
Pironkova was broken in six of her seven service games, winning just 35 per cent of the points on serve, although Ivanovic was relieved to get of the mark in a Group B that also includes Sam Stosur and Elena Vesnina.
"It's always tough playing a local girl," Ivanovic, who won the tournament when it was held in Bali in 2010 and 2011.
"Obviously to open the tournament and play the first match is never easy, but I really enjoyed it.
"I really tried to focus on what I had to do and I did serve well - I was placing the ball really well around the court - and I was really happy with that.
"It's tough to play on a new court so I'm really happy to win the match."
Top seed Simona Halep, a five-time winner on the WTA Tour this year, beat Anastasia Pavyluchenkova 6-3 6-3.
The Romanian is joined at the top of the group by Alize Cornet who was handed her first win after Maria Kirilenko retired 5-0 down after half-an-hour of their match.
Kirilenko's injury has cast doubt about her participation in the remainder of the tournament, which brings together six tournament winners from this year's tour.
