Federer has employed six-time grand slam champion Edberg for 10 weeks this season, starting at the Rod Laver Arena against home hope James Duckworth on Tuesday, as he once again bids to challenge the world's elite.
Four-time former Australian Open champion Federer, who is currently ranked sixth in the world rankings after a forgettable 2013, was rarely stretched in a 6-4 6-4 6-2 victory against the energetic, if limited, Duckworth in extreme temperatures.
"It's great fun to be playing in front of him (Edberg) and it's been a dream come true for me," Federer said.
"I used to watch his matches and get inspired to play this great game so to have him in my corner through the year and this tournament is very special and I can't be thankful enough."
No 10 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga eased through into the second round of the Australian Open with a straight-sets win Filippo Volandri. The Frenchman came through on top 7-5 6-3 6-3.
Milos Raonic, the 11th seed, recovered from a third set wobble to beat Daniel Gimeno-Traver 7-6 (7-2) 6-1 4-6 6-2, while Kei Nishikori came through a five-set epic against Marinko Matosevic with the 16th seed registering a 6-3 5-7 6-2 4-6 6-2 victory.
No 22 seed Grigor Dimitrov bounced back from losing the first set to edge out Bradley Klahn 6-7 (9-7) 6-4 6-4 6-3.
However John Isner saw his challenge ended by an ankle injury, with the 13th seed forced to withdraw from his match against Martin Klizan while trailing 6-2 7-6 (8-6).
Juan Martin Del Potro recovered from a slow start to beat Rhyne Williams, with the fifth seed eventually coming out on top 6-7 (7-1) 6-3 6-4 6-4.
Andreas Seppi silenced the home fans as he won a five-set epic against Lleyton Hewitt. Seppi, the 24th seed, saved a match point in the decider before going on to win 7-6(4) 6-3 5-7 5-7 7-5.
Spanish seed Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco are both through after they beat Somdev Devvarman and Zhang Ze respectively.
