The 23-year-old British No 2 is looking to make the most of the lucky loser spot he was awarded after being beaten by Germany's Bjorn Phau in qualifying.
Evans was left out of the Great Britain team which upset USA in San Diego after going against team captain's Leon Smith's wishes by declining to play in a tournament in Hawaii last week.
In the day's other opening round matches, sixth-seeded Czech Lukas Rosol dispatched Dudi Sela from Israel 6-3 7-6 (2) and Dutch eighth seed Igor Sijsling fought back to defeat Blaz Kavcic from Slovenia 6-7 (4) 6-3 6-4.
Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev beat Victor Hanescu from Romania 7-6 (6) 4-6 7-6 (5) and Andrey Kuznetsov from Russia knocked out Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4 7-6 (8).
Meanwhile, local favourite Marin Cilic, who was handed a bye to the second round, eased past Serbia's Dusan Lajovic 6-4 7-5.
The Croatian fifth seed squandered six break points in the first set but luckily only needed one break to take it before claiming a tight second to move through.
