Jeremy Chardy suffered a shock exit at the hands of Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas in the opening round of the ATP SkiStar Swedish Open in Bastad.
Cuevas, ranked 111 in the world, triumphed 6-2 6-2 for just his fourth tour-level win of the season over the much-fancied fourth seed.
Defending champion Carlos Berlocq looked like he was heading the same way as Chardy when he lost the first set against Julian Reister but he recovered to beat the German 2-6 6-2 6-2.
Eighth seed Pablo Carreno Busta defeated Dustin Brown 6-3 6-4 while it was a good day for the home nation.
The days of Sweden being a power in men's tennis have gone but their brightest young hope, 18-year-old Elias Ymer, posted his first ATP Tour victory with a 6-3 7-5 win over Mikhail Kukushkin and fellow wild card Christian Lindell did the same against Inigo Cervantes.
There were also wins for qualifiers Radu Albot, Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Renzo Olivo, and Romanian Victor Hanescu.
