ATP Claro Open: British No 3 James Ward advances as opponent Matthew Ebden retires

James Ward advanced to the second round of the Claro Open in Colombia after opponent Matthew Ebden retired when already a set down.
The British No 3 was already a set up on seventh-seeded Ebden and well in control of the second when the Australian opted to quit when 4-6 and 0-3 behind.
Ward will now face Taiwan’s Jimmy Wang in the last 16 after he came through a tough three-setter to beat Poland’s Michal Przysiezny 7-6 (7/4) 4-6 6-3.
In other first round action Canada’s Peter Polansky beat home player Nicolas Barrientos 3-6 6-4 6-3, while eighth-seeded Victor Estrella of the Dominican Republic overcame Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Londero 7-5 6-3.
Third seed Vasek Pospisil became the first man to book his spot in the third round as he saw off Alex Kuznetsov of the United States in straight sets, triumphing 7-5 7-5.
