The world No 169 needed two tie-break sets to edge out a player who was once regarded as a future star of the world game.
The 27-year-old Londoner won 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-4) in a contest dominated by serve, clinching victory in exactly 100 minutes. If he beats Blaz Rola in the next round he will secure a spot in the main draw at Roland Garros.
Neither set featured a break of serve, with just two break points in the entire match.
Ward, the British No 3, secured the opener on his third set point before sealing the triumph by winning four of the final five points.
The 22-year-old Harrison, whose highest ranking of No 43 was almost two years ago, is now at 129 in the list.
The clay-court grand slam at Roland Garros in Paris begins on Sunday.
