Great Britain's Andy Murray has been seeded eighth for this year's US Open at Flushing Meadows.

Murray, 27, who underwent back surgery last September, has been in inconsistent form this season with his results reflected in his drop down the rankings to ninth.

The 2012 champion moved up the seedings to eighth after defending champion and world No 2 Rafael Nadal pulled out with a wrist injury.

But it is still Murray's lowest seeding at a Grand Slam event since he was seeded 12th for Wimbledon in 2008.

World No 1 Novak Djokovic will be the top seed, while in Nadal's absence, five-time US Open champion Federer will be second seed ahead of Stan Wawrinka, David Ferrer, Milos Raonic, Tomas Berdych and Grigor Dimitrov.

Federer, 33, is seeded at the US Open for the 14th consecutive year, bringing him level with Ivan Lendl and trailing only Jimmy Connors' astonishing record of 18 straight seasons but the world No 3 has not won the tournament since 2008.

Djokovic has played in the last four US Open finals, winning the title in 2011 but losing to Nadal in 2010 and 2013 and to Andy Murray two years ago.
