The British No 1 is seeded 16th and carries his country's best hopes of an extended run at Roland Garros - in the absence of the injured Andy Murray - after recently breaking into the world's top 20 for the first time.
Britain's other representative in the men's singles draw, 22-year-old Cameron Norrie, has been rewarded for making a Grand Slam main draw for the first time by being paired with Germany's Petr Gojowczyk.
Defending champion Rafael Nadal is chasing a record-extending 11th title and will begin his campaign against Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov.
"It's always special when I come back to Paris where I have had so many wonderful moments in my career," said Nadal at the draw ceremony.
Nadal's path to the final could see him face childhood friend Richard Gasquet in the third round, possibly Denis Shapovalov in the last 16, then Kevin Anderson, who he beat in the 2017 US Open final, and third-seed Marin Cilic in the semi-finals.
His great rival Novak Djokovic is in the opposite half of the draw. The Serbian will take on a yet-to-be-decided qualifier in his opener and could potentially meet Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round.
