Richard Gasquet proved too strong for British No 2 Aljaz Bedene, winning their first-round Wimbledon clash in straight sets.
Bedene had chances against the seventh seed but only won one of seven break points as he was beaten 6-3 6-4 6-3.
Gasquet, a potential quarter-final opponent for Andy Murray, will play Spain's Marcel Granollers in the second round after he beat Victor Estrella Burgos 6-2 6-4 2-6 6-4.
Nick Kyrgios recovered from dropping the third set on a tie-break to beat Czech veteran Radek Stepanek 6-4 6-3 6-7 (9-11) 6-1.
The 15th seed served for the match in the third but Stepanek fought back to extend the contest.
Kyrgios was given a warning at the end of the third set for an outburst that included telling his support team to stop watching him.
"The crowd likes the way I play here, I entertain," he said afterwards. "I'm comfortable here and they know the tennis I bring every day.
"I knew I had to be on my game, I couldn't lapse at all. It was a tough match."
Kyrgios was broken when serving for the match and then failed to take a match point in the tie-break, but powered to victory in the fourth set.
The Australian will face Dustin Brown in the second round following his 4-6 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-4 victory over Dusan Lajovic.
Meanwhile, Juan Martin del Potro set up a second-round clash with fourth seed Stan Wawrinka after winning his first Grand Slam match in over two years.
Del Potro, who is appearing at Wimbledon for the first time since 2013 due to injuries, won 6-1 7-5 6-0 against Stephane Robert.
"I'm enjoying tennis again. I'm starting to talk about tennis and not about my wrist. That's important," said Del Potro. "I would like to stay here on tour for (a few more) years. I think I'm close to get that goal."
Meanwhile, Wawrinka came through 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 against American youngster Taylor Fritz.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga maintained his record of never having lost in the first round at Wimbledon as he beat Inigo Cervantes 6-4 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.
Feliciano Lopez, the 22nd seed, beat Rajeev Ram in straight sets, 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 6-4, while Alexander Zverev was 6-3 6-4 3-0 up against Paul-Henri Mathieu before rain stopped play.
In a match that was postponed on Monday due to bad light, Gilles Muller beat Santiago Giraldo 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 15-13.
Roberto Bautista Agut, seeded 14th, breezed through 6-3 6-3 6-3 against Australian Jordan Thompson.
