US Open doubles title for Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova

Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova shocked top seeds Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic to clinch the women's doubles title at the US Open, on Sunday.

The No 12 seeds were on court for just over two hours in posting a 2-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 victory.

In the second set, the French duo served for the match at 5-4, only to be broken to love.

The only break of serve in the final set came in the opening game, with Mattek-Sands and Safarova claiming the title on their second match point.

An overjoyed Mattek-Sands said: "To have this result here has been amazing. It's a special day today here for everybody in New York.

"This is a huge win. We both looked at each other and we said: 'We have a US Open trophy right now.'

"I think especially being on 9/11, it's really a big thing to enjoy the people you're with, enjoy the moment. I get a little emotional."

As for the contest itself, she added: "It was a little bit of a slow start but I've got to give credit to our opponents.

"They came out playing big, serving big, making all their rolls, ripping returns.

"I think one of the things that we do really well is we don't get too down no matter what the score is."

Safarova, a doubles bronze medallist from Rio, added: "I'm still overwhelmed with what just happened.

"We were both injured throughout the year but we stick together."

For Mattek-Sands and Safarova, it was a third Grand Slam title in partnership, following successes at Melbourne and Roland Garros in 2015.

Garcia and Mladenovic are the reigning French Open champions.
