Lucie Safarova: Bidding for a personal best
In a year which has seen her make her first Grand Slam final, Lucie Safarova will bid to make the last eight for the first time.
Safarova climbed to a career-high ranking after losing title decider in three sets to Serena Williams at Roland Garros, where defending champion Maria Sharapova was among her victims.
It was the left-hander's first Grand Slam final in singles but she has enjoyed success at the highest level in doubles - as shown when she claimed the doubles title in Paris to add to her Australian Open triumph.
While those matches all came on clay, Safarova is far from a red-dirt specialist. She won on hardcourts in Doha earlier this season and has more career victories on the surface than any other.
Her Wimbledon campaign was ended by Coco Vandeweghe at the fourth round but only after two tie-breakers and Safarova's form on the whole has been very strong all season. Indeed she gained a measure of revenge by beating the American in Cincinnati only to lose to Elina Svitolina in round three.
Safarova, who made the fourth round of the US Open for the first time in her career last season, continues to look a threat at the highest level. She'll be aiming for a first appearance in the quarter-finals and maybe more.
