David Ferrer Player Profile

David Ferrer of Spain is an outside bet for the US Open

David Ferrer has enjoyed a productive 2015 so far but the search for a first Grand Slam continues.

Always associated among the world's top 10 players, the Spanish clay court specialist has remained a threat to anybody who opposes him but has never captured one of tennis' top prizes.

Winning tournaments in Qatar, Rio de Janiero and Acapulco got his year off to a good start but it has since taken a turn for worse as an elbow injury forced his withdrawal from Wimbledon.

The gritty, battling qualities of the Spaniard will please an American crowd who will appreciate his efforts but will it be enough to challenge the elite players? His pre-Wimbledon injury means Ferrer hasn't had much practice time ahead of Flushing Meadows - he was the only top 10 player absent from the Cincinnati Masters.

His new-found ranking of Spain's No 1 after Rafael Nadal's decline underlines the consistent threat that Ferrer poses when fit.

The seventh seed will know that, at 33 years old, time is running out to make his mark in the latter stages of a Grand Slam.
