Player Profile

One of the best hardcourt performers on the tour, Blake made the quarter-finals in Melbourne last year for the first time before losing to nemesis Roger Federer.

Given he was critical of the new plexicushion surface in the build-up 12 months ago, this year should suit the American Davis Cup winner even more.

The courts are expected to play faster - probably more like the North American decoturf on which Blake has enjoyed the most success.

He loves to find a rhythm on his forehand with the high bouncing ball at the back of the court, but knock him out of that and he can struggle.

Another second-week exit seems likely.
