Nadal: Defending champion

Player Profile

The out-of-sorts Spaniard deservedly grabbed his maiden Australian Open title in 2009, but the reigning champion faces a huge scrap if he is to retain his crown.

A bout of severe knee tendonitis kept Nadal off court for 10 weeks of the 2009 season, a year which saw him relinquish both the French Open and Wimbledon titles.

And, after spectacularly winning the Australian Open title in a marathon five-setter against great rival Roger Federer 12 months ago, he won't want to surrender this crown without a fight.

As well as regaining his title, the Melbourne showpiece also provides Nadal with an early chance to kick-start his charge towards regaining the number one ranking.

The world number two is without a Tour title since May, but he did win the exhibition event in Abu Dhabi recently, so will still be expected to mount a serious assault on the trophy.
