Player Profile

Probably best known for his run to the US Open semi-finals in 2007, Ferrer made the last eight 12 months ago.

He was also part of Spain's Davis Cup-winning squad in 2008.

However, by the time of the season-ending final, Ferrer's form had dipped considerably and he faces a battle to regain it in time for Melbourne.

But if there's a man on the tour you would want fighting your corner, Ferrer would have to be considered as his five-set record is excellent - nine wins from 11 five-setters.

Like most Spaniards, he would prefer to be playing on clay but his hardcourt record is far from shabby in recent years, so if he does get on a roll, Ferrer could go a long way.
