Another of the big climbers on the ATP rankings in 2008, the 20-year-old's spectacular second half of the season takes some beating.
He won four tournaments back to back to climb from 65th in early July to ninth by the season's end.
That brought a maiden Masters Cup appearance - a terrific achievement for a man who only left his teens behind in September.
With a big serve and great power off the ground, Del Potro has the game to take on the best, although his record against the top 10 will need to improve if he is to continue his rankings climb in 2009.
He should go well, especially after his recent win in Auckland, but there appear more likely champions.
