Something of a veteran on the WTA Tour these days - Schnyder turned 30 in December - the Swiss has been remarkably consistent for more than 10 years now.
She's become a regular both in the top 20 of the rankings and the second week of Grand Slam tournaments, as was highlighted in 2008 when she made the quarter-finals of both the French and US Opens.
However, it is in Melbourne where Schnyder produced her best major run, reaching the semis back in 2004.
Two other appearances in the last eight show this is a tournament she enjoys - in fact Schnyder has admitted she would like to live in Australia when she retires - although the switch to the new plexicushion surface last year brought a second-round exit.
Never one to dismiss lightly, the left-hander should go well but she is not a real title contender.

Novak Djokovic has a great chance to build his self-confidence in Rotterdam this week, says Barry Cowan.
Barry Cowan says Andy Murray should use his Australian Open final loss as a springboard to greater things.
