Player Profile

When Rafael Nadal won in Paris 12 months ago, he confirmed what most people already knew - that he was one of the best players ever to step onto a claycourt.

But his demolition of Roger Federer in the final - Nadal lost just four games - built the platform for the Spaniard to elevate himself to world number one and a shot at all-round greatness.

Since picking up the French Open trophy for the fourth time, Nadal has gone on to add his first non-claycourt Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon and this year's Australian Open, on both occasions beating Federer in the final again, courtesy of some stunning tennis.

With his dominance over one of the all-time greats, Nadal is now in a position to push himself into the pantheon of tennis legends and a fifth straight title here will help him to so.

With his awesome defence - his ability to retrieve balls is second to none - Nadal has suffered just five claycourt defeats in 155 matches and so comes here a red-hot, odds-on favourite.

It will certainly be a big upset if Nadal loses his unbeaten record at Roland Garros this season, although a defeat to Federer in Madrid recently suggests there is at least a small chink in his armour.
