David Ferrer slipped off the radar in the second half of 2008, but the dogged 27-year-old has returned resurgent in 2009 although he has yet to land a title this campaign.
Ferrer, who boasts supreme fitness and electric pace around a tennis court, has all the ingredients of a claycourt specialist and that was proved as he reached the final in Barcelona before falling to the sword of world number one - and perhaps the greatest player to grace the red surface - Rafael Nadal.
Add an exceptional record in five-set matches (10 wins out of 12) to Ferrer's physical attributes and the Spanish number three can ask serious questions of some of the other leading stars in Paris this May/June, although one will not be so hasty as to suggest we are talking about this year's champion.
