Player Profile

The Australian Open has a habit of throwing up surprise packages and this year it was Fernando Verdasco who came to the fore in Melbourne.

The hard-hitting left-hander powered his way through the draw with some awesome displays, ending Andy Murray's title hopes in the process.

He eventually came up just short against eventual champion Rafael Nadal in the semis, but not before pushing him into a sixth hour - the longest match in tournament history.

Verdasco's form has hardly tailed off since his efforts Down Under either - he's subsequently been to the quarter-finals of all five Masters 1000 events.

He's also a player who knows his way around a claycourt, as so many of the Spaniards do.

His early-career success came on this surface and it's easy to see him progressing to the last eight at Roland Garros for the first time. Certainly a dangerous outsider.
