The US Open is the only Grand Slam title Rafael Nadal has yet to win.
But his chances of becoming only the seventh man in history to complete a full set of majors does not look good as he has only just returned from a lengthy injury absence.
Much has been made of Nadal's dodgy knees over the years and the problem finally became a major one following his shock defeat in the last 16 of the French Open.
Tendonitis was diagnosed and the Spaniard was forced to miss Wimbledon.
Not only did he lose his title in SW19, but his position as world number one also slipped away - in fact Andy Murray has also now climbed above him.
Nadal did at least manage to return to action in early August but although he did manage to reach the latter stages in Montreal and Cincinnati it was notable that when he came up against a top-10 player he was well beaten.
In conclusion, this tournament looks to have come a little too early for a player regarded as the best defender in the game.
